Course Description

This course is intended to give the student insight to an important area of mathematics and how it connects with problems in the real world. Each topic consists of one six-week module. The emphasis will be on how the mathematics is used in a real world context.

Required items for course:
  • Device that can record sound and videoAudacity (free)
  • Metal slinky
  • Access to an instrument of any type
  • 2 narrow tubes, identical except one twice as long as another, and some kind of a cap for one (“boomwhacker” tubes can be bought and are ideal or you can make your own using empty foil or wrapping tubes or something similar. A rigid tube will be easier to work with.)
